11:30a -2:30p Annual Picnic for Relative Caregivers and Their Families Returns to Kingston

The 2nd Annual Relatives as Parents Program (RAPP) Summer Picnic will be held at Forsyth Park located on Lucas Avenue in Kingston on Saturday, August 15 from 11:30am to 2:30pm. There will be children’s activities including games, races, a tour of the Forsyth Nature Center and use of the Kinderland playground area.

Sandwiches, chips, beverages and ice cream will be provided. Participants are asked to bring a dish to share if they can. Adult participants will have time to relax, network with other caregivers and the RAPP staff and enjoy a day in the park!

In addition to fun activities and great food, RAPP will also be giving out free school supplies to all the children who attend.

Pasture Walk for Farm Profit Comes to Gardiner

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange and Ulster Counties will host a pasture walk on Tuesday, August 18 at the Kiernan Farm located at 1308 Bruynswick Road in Gardiner. The walk will be from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm and will be addressing such topics as proper seeding, grazing techniques, production cycles of grasses, IPM fly pest control on pastured horses and livestock, and weed identification. Pesticide Re-Certification and Certified Crop Advisor Continuing Education Credits are available.

The fee for this program is $15 and pre-registration is required no later than Wednesday, August 12.

This program will be led by Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Equine and Livestock Educator, Audrey Reith. She will present simple, easy to do land monitoring and pasture management methods that will target the root cause of problems and then provide solutions to fine tune pasture management, establish pasturing goals, create records to monitor plant and soil conditions, identify problem areas and examine changes in pasture productivity.

2:30p How about a leisurely summer afternoon stroll through a beautiful award winning Xeriscape Garden? Take in the sights of a spectacularly lush and colorful garden that features flourishing perennial herbs, robust shrubs and captivating flowers.

Join Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County’s Master Gardeners at the Jacob A. Hasbrouck Building on the SUNY Ulster Campus in Stone Ridge on Saturday, August 22 at 2:30pm for a guided tour.

Master Gardeners will explain the principles of drought resistant garden design and planting techniques which help to create this incredible gardening spectacle.

Tea and a guided tour of Victoria Gardens in Rosendale will immediately follow the Xeriscape tour. The cost of the tour, talk and tea is $15 per person. All participants will receive a comprehensive list of water-wise plants to help them start their very own Xeriscape Garden. Space is limited and pre-registration is required by Wednesday, August 19. A rain date is set for Sunday, August 23.

The Xeriscape Garden is an interactive teaching tool in the selection of heat tolerant, water-wise plants, integrated pest management and alternative landscaping techniques.

3:00p -5:00p We regret the passing of K9 Regan, beloved partner of Deputy Sheriff Tom Lattin of the Ulster County Sheriff's Office. Regan served for over 9 years and passed away on August 20, 2009 at the age of 12 1/2.

We have a Memorial service planned at the Robert Post Park, Park Rd Lake Katrine. Friday September 4, 2009 at 3-5 PM. Everyone from the area is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided for all those attending.

Anyone wishing to share a memory of their own of K9 Regan, personal or professional whether it be funny or serious, should contact Sergeant Fulford ASAP. Also We are looking for members who would like to read a K9 memorial poem in honor of K9 Regan there are several poems to choose from should you decide to. This request should also be made to Sgt. Fulford. (wful@co.ulster.ny.us)
